Did you know that South Carolina is home to a nationally recognized topiary gardener who has been featured on The Tonight Show, Martha Stewart, and been the subject of newspaper and magazine articles and even a television documentary? The gardener is Pearl Fryar and his topiary garden in Bishopville, SC is internationally known.
While not everyone is a gardener, it's hard to find anyone who doesn't enjoy the visual experience of a beautiful garden. In his three acre garden, Pearl snips and clips bushes and trees into living sculptures with the help of his hedge trimmer, skill and imagination.
To have such an acclaimed and interesting garden so close is our great fortune. Pearl Fryar's Topiary Garden is open to the public year round, Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00am - 4:00pm. You really should make it a point to go and be awed by his creativity, devotion, and diligence to his piece of heaven on earth. You will have an Outdoorlicioius! day.

April being the last "R" month for awhile, I find myself asking; fact or myth... you should only eat oysters in months with an "R?"
In the days before refrigeration, when oysters could quickly spoil, the "R" month rule made sense. Plus, oysters spawn in the warm summer months, causing them to become fatty, watery, soft, and less flavorful. However, with oysters being shipped from cooler climates and oyster farms plentiful, you can safely eat oysters all year round.
For all you oyster lovers, this recipe for Cheddar Parmesan Ranch Grilled Oysters should hit the spot.

The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden is one of the select few gardens to be chosen as a preservation project of The Garden Conservancy. This institution preserves and sustains America's exceptional gardens by providing horticultural, management, and financial expertise to ensure long-term stewardship of notable gardens.
The Garden Conservancy has helped hundreds of extraordinary gardens survive and prosper. Many of these gardens are National Historic Landmarks or on the National Register of Historic Places.
Each year, the Conservancy sponsors an Open Days Program, which allows public access to some of America's most exceptional private gardens. Co-sponsored by Spoleto Festival USA and the Charleston Horticultural Society, Charleston Open Day is May 25 and features 13 private gardens.

Just a few short years ago, there was hardly any attention paid to the floors of outdoor rooms. How things have changed. Outdoor area rugs are everywhere with selections like you have never seen before. Solids, textures, stripes, florals, geometric and themed designs are being manufactured in an outdoor yarn to create durable, quick drying and easily cleaned area rugs to use in your outdoor rooms.
In terms of materials, the best yarn for outdoor rugs is polypropylene, also known as olefin. This is a man-made fiber that naturally resists mildew and moisture retention. It is fade resistant, however, some manufacturers add UV stabilizers to insure extra long life against the sun's strong rays.
Adding an outdoor rug to your outdoor room makes a big impact on the space. Visually, it helps take an outdoor room to another level of decoration that rivals indoor rooms. Architecturally, it helps delineate a space, which is often necessary in an outdoor room without walls or other architectural features to define it. Practically, it adds warmth and softness under foot, encouraging the use of your outdoor room even in cooler temperatures.
