Sometimes I am in search of using an everyday food in a new way. This month's recipe for Grilled Lettuces piqued my interest and intrigues me because it is such a simple thing that had never occurred to me. Have you ever eaten a cold lettuce salad that has a warm ingredient added-warm dressing, grilled meat or seafood, or broiled mushrooms? Adding a warm element to the salad is a nice variation on what we normally think of as a cold dish.
I love the addition of radicchio as it has a nutty flavor which is enhanced by heating. The only thing I think I may add to this salad is grilled Portobello mushrooms but you may find that you prefer adding an ingredient that makes this your own personal favorite house salad.

Two major outdoor furniture manufacturers are running their yearly factory-authorized sales right now. Lloyd Flanders continues its "Discover Luxury" Sale through April 30. All current furniture styles, throw pillows, and replacement cushions are included in this once-a-year sale. Saving off our everyday discounted pricing is 20%, which can help pay for some accessories to spruce up your outdoor living room.
Summer Classics is offering an additional 10% off our everyday discounted prices through April 12. All in-stock and special order furniture is included in this price. If you have seen Summer Classics in any of the catalogs that come into your mailbox, or online, you may want to check with us before making a decision. We can usually save you money and, when we deliver, we take care of all packaging and whatever assembly is required. Easy!

There's a new gift card in town and it's called Yiftee. What is it? It is the brain child of a California company, inspired by the national movement to encourage people to shop locally. The founders developed a gift card that can be purchased on line either on the Yiftee site or by linking from a participating business site (like Casual Living) to the Yiftee site. Any amount may be purchased from $5.00 to $250.00 and, once the transaction is complete, the Yiftee "card" gets sent to the (gift) receiver's email or smart phone. There's no need to visit the store or restaurant and, in most circumstances, there is no need to print anything to bring in.
For access to Casual Living's yiftee, you may visit our website, where you will find the orange Yiftee icon in the upper right hand corner. Click on it and you will be redirected to our Yiftee page on their website. Complete your transaction and that's all you need to do. You may also visit the Yiftee website directly for access to local participating businesses.
The best part for you? If the receiver does not use the yiftee within ninety days, the money (less a small transaction fee) will be returned to your account.
Casual Living will continue to offer gift certificates for those who would like something tangible and with a longer expiration period. To purchase a traditional gift certificate, visit either of our Columbia locations and we will prepare one in any amount you would like.
Happy gifting!

The local food scene in Columbia has been growing over the past few years. From restaurants which source ingredients locally to open air markets that feature the people who farm, harvest, or create food and other products, the idea of eating food that comes from nearby and has not traveled mega miles to reach you, is appealing to a growing number of people.
Soda City Market is one of the best markets I have visited in Columbia. And, one of the things I love best about it is that it is located right downtown. Fresh seafood, vegetables, eggs, baked goods, herbs, cheese, honey, pasta, and prepared foods are available each Saturday morning from 9-1 on Main Street between Sumter and Hampton Streets. Vendors selling handcrafted soaps, jewelry, and artwork round out the market, offering something for everyone and making for an enjoyable stroll while taking it all in.
Go with your own bag and see what you can find for dinner or, perhaps an ingredient that will spark your creative juices for a special weekend meal. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash, so bring Fido for a bit of exercise and socializing. |
