The arrival of spring (this Sunday in the northern hemisphere) means sprucing up your outdoor living room.  Cleaning is certainly on the to-do list (no fun) but adding something new to the mix (fun) should also be on that list.

Throw pillows are one of the easiest and most cost effective accessories that can be added to achieve your goal. There are so many outdoor throw pillow options to choose from…

You’ll find outdoor throw pillows everywhere but if you can sew, or have a seamstress who can, you can be as creative as you want to be and create one-of-a-kind, unique pillows that no one else will have.

Typically, sizes range from 14” square to 24” square, with 16”, 18”, and 20” being the most popular. 16” and 18” are good for chairs with thick cushions and smaller scaled furniture, particularly garden benches. Large scaled sofas and loveseats can handle a 20” throw pillow but 18” is always a safe choice.

Rectangular pillows are an interesting change from the usual square shape. Long, thin ones (usually 9” x 22”), known as kidney pillows, are a great choice in a chair where you may want additional lumbar support. For a chaise lounge, a rectangular pillow about 19” wide x 12” high fills the space nicely.

Try mixing shapes and sizes for interest.

Make sure your outdoor pillows are filled with a man-made material that will tolerate moisture. Down is a big no-no outside. If you must have the feel of down, there are a few manufacturers who produce a down-like insert which is as close to down for outdoor use as you can get. If you like to chop the top of your pillows, this is what you want.

Fabrics must also be suitable for moisture and UV resistance if you don’t want them to be a mildew magnet or fade within the season. As with all outdoor fabrics, solution-dying is the most fade resistant process. While the fabric is more costly, the value is clear when your pillows continue to look nice years down the road.

Adding throw pillows to your outdoor furniture is like adding spice to your cuisine. You don’t have to but it makes all the difference in the world.
