Heather and Brad's Outdoor Room

In this Columbia home, a large backyard space with seating, dining, and lounging areas anchored by a pool and spa has become one large outdoor room. The addition of a free-standing stone fireplace creates a focal point at one end of the pool and gives the seating group the exclamation point it needs to hold its own next to the beautiful water feature.

Maintaining the color scheme throughout the space was important, however, a collection of pieces that blend, rather than match, was chosen to keep things interesting. A happy mixture of styles and textures has created a custom look unique to the home-owner.

Aluminum-framed, vinyl-strapped chaise lounges occupy two opposing sides of the pool. The seating group by the fireplace is woven man-made wicker on an aluminum frame. Cushions are not necessary on this contemporary-styled furniture--the seat has enough give to be comfortable. The loveseat in the group is actually a left and a right arm chair which can be used separately. With the addition of a center unit, this could grow into a sofa. Both coffee and end tables have a removable tray top—handy for serving.

The large copper-topped dining table is surrounded by six teak and all-weather wicker dining side chairs and two slip-covered upholstered outdoor dining arm chairs.

A round all-weather wicker bed between the seating and dining areas provides an oasis of luxury where one, or two, can surround themselves with plush cushions and throw pillows and take a nap in ultimate comfort.

Large pots filled with a variety of leaves and colorful flowers bring the gardens into the living area and add textural and color interest. Along with throw pillows, the pots are the accents that put “pop” into the color scheme and can be changed easily whenever change is desired.

With strong sun all day, several umbrellas are ready to provide shade and relief. A neutral Sunbrella fabric was selected to blend with everything and be a unifying element in the overall design.

Satisfying the relaxation and fun quotient of one, or the whole family, this backyard retreat provides the vacation-like atmosphere that keeps the family happy to come home.
